The European Forest Institute (EFI), partner in the Life SPAN project and responsible for technical dissemination activities, has set up three martelloscopes in the Cansiglio Forest and University Forest Sailershausen demonstration areas, two in Italy and one in Germany.
The martelloscopes are part of the Integrate Network, promoted by EFI, which aims to promote Integrated Forest Management, reconciling biodiversity conservation with silviculture, at the level of policy, practice and research. These 'gyms' are one of the most important tools for achieving this goal, creating demonstration areas in the forest where all those involved in forest management can practice not only economic but also ecological and environmental assessments.
The martelloscopes established as part of the Life SPAN project can also be used independently. By clicking on the images below, it is possible to access the fact sheets dedicated to each of the three sites, with all the material needed to get to know the areas and organize training.
A Martelloscope is an area of 1 hectare of surface in which each tree over 7 cm in diameter has been measured and recorded within a system that attributes, based on its characteristics, a value in economic terms and biodiversity. All the information are collected by software that allows testing of different types of intervention, transforming the forest into an open-air classroom where to discuss and simulate the results of the various management solutions.
